colour proportion Miss A 'Touch'

I have learnt from the colour proportion lessons the technique of balancing colours in a palette. In this music vide by Miss A which I have provided screen grabs from, the main star is the red hue. It demonstrates  using less of a saturated colour against more muted colours . The video has consistent splashes of red proportionally smaller then the other colours harmonious mostly broken hues. The Lyrics often refer to confessions of love 'you touch my heart'. The colour red can symbolize love. Alongside the symbolism I think the video is really beautiful and owes a lot of that to the colour alone.

A sad, sad scene

After trying to keep a keen eye whilst watching movies and paying attention to the visual story telling more then anything else, this scene in Tangled garnered my attention. The colour and light reflect the mourning of Rapunzal as she holds her dead lover in her arms. The movie
changes drastically from bright  romantic colours, to this dull, muted broken palette, no saturation and dim, grey light. This is truly a great example of visual story telling and even if you hadn't watched the movie you would know what has happened was heartbreaking to Rapunzel immediately.

When is a broken palette appropriate?

The lesson on creating a desaturated palette drew my thoughts back to my some of my favourite video games The 'Legend of Zelda' series. The wii title Twilight Princess has been haled as one of the more 'darker'  games in the series. I suppose I agree with this but the visuals coincide with he content and had me thinking how they influence the way the player feels. The colour palette as demonstrated by these images I have gathered shows the palette is made up of harmonious colours and a range gained by using broken versions of them together. It gives the mood of the story a more mature feel. Overall the colour communicates with the player what kind of game they are playing if they were to look at a screengrab of twilight princess then they would understand instantly merely from the colour palette that it has a darker and serious theme to it. Another example proving how important colour is in story telling.

Now compare twilight princess colours to the newer addition to the legend of zelda family skyward sword... My mood has lifted already just from looking from the twilight screen grabs to this one. There are still some broken colours but they compliment the areas of highly saturated bright areas like the flowers and the red blob.

The creators claimed to have referenced the work of the french painter Paul Cezzane.

recipe for grey= 1tsp of black + 1 tsp of white

A gratuitous post of some class work. Here you have my palette that demonstrated the desaturation of a hue when mixed with its complimentary. I once again feel enlightened. And there I was thinking grey was just made by mixing black and white. We learnt how to desaturate colours by hand. This is a magical discovery and I am suddenly creating things I never dreamed of creating outside of photoshop. To think that if I tinted or shade each broken colour how huge my palette could be all from two colours and black and white.

Value studies

Lilo and Stitch is my study of choice for values. The setting is Hawaii, an island that isn't unfamiliar with a sunny day or two. For that reason the colours are lighter and the backgrounds are full of light in general of course because a sunny island would look horribly out of place if painted with murky light a la Rembrandt style.

Also I think Rembrandt is worth a mention, I enjoy his paintings a great deal and the are at the opposite end end of the spectrum that Lilo and Stitch would be on. The selective areas of light give his paintings great atmosphere.

Happy, Sad

My palette demonstrating a range in vale one can get from mixing white and black with a hue. From now on I have to consider what I am communicating with my work. Light and dark can mean a lot. Night, day. Happy, sad. Just another new tool learned that I have at my disposal.

The blacklist

Vintage disney posters didn't hold back on colour. The green and the red compliment each other. If I would say one thing about this...its eye catching. Contrasty.  My tired eyes really cannot appreciate the highly saturated light blue in the background. I think the extreme values and overkill of bright colours suggests this was aimed for kids. This one makes a narrow escape from my colour blacklist.

I am sensing a running theme for these Disney picture book covers. Garish and eye catching.

Unearthing more gems. A prime candiate representing the quality that is the disney sequel. A screen grab from Aladdin 'Return of Jafar'. This was probably made on a tight budget and even tighter schedule and o has the visuals suffered because of it.  The purples work well together...

The beginning: Hues

I present my first colour palette made for lesson one in colour theory. A set of 12 hues, nothing more and nothing less. Hue=pure colour. Pure Colour= extremely bright. If I was to use a pure hue I would use it sparingly as its is visually strong.

post 1

I’m going to make use of these blog posts by trying to understand colour with the information I’ve retained from class. I often don’t understand much unless I put knowledge in to practice so I thought it wise to do case studies of different selected a colour palette for each lesson.
